Ailyn Pérez brings her acclaimed portrayal of Puccini’s Tosca to Budapest this February, making her debut at the Hungarian National Opera. Tosca has quickly become a signature for the soprano, who has bowed in this iconic role at Royal Ballet and Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, the National Arts Centre Ottawa, Fondazione Petruzzelli, and San Francisco Opera, where her debut performance was praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as “the very embodiment of it in the title role.”
Pérez will appear in Dr. Szilveszter Ókovács’ production, which sets the action in Budapest in the 1950s, when Hungary lived under a Stalinist, totalitarian regime, eventually culminating in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Pérez will perform on February 7, 12, and 14, under the baton of Gergely Kesselyák. Tenor Szabolcs Brickner plays Tosca’s lover, Mario Cavaradossi, with baritone Vladislav Sulimsky as the villainous Baron Scarpia and bass Bence Pataki as the fugitive Cesare Angelotti.
